Lumpology Space Time Project:

First mars rover (1997)

The NASA Mars pathfinder mission craft landed on Mars in July 1997, and unfolded itself to release a ten and a half kilo rover with six wheels named Sojourner.

Though the name Sojourner sounds logical to the mission, and it is,
in fact the rover was named for an American freed slave and abolitionist of the 1800’s named Sojourner Truth who traveled the country speaking of freedom and human and women’s rights.

Sojourner traveled around the surface of Mars,
taking photographs, examining and analyzing rock samples for chemical composition and magnetism, using a portable spectrometer.

The semi- autonomous rover was powered by batteries which were charged by a small solar panel.
