First landing on an asteroid(2001)

On February 12, 2001, the spacecraft NEAR Shoemaker completed the first landing on an asteroid.

The asteroid Eros was 315 million kilometres from Earth. It was the first near-earth asteroid discovered.

The landing was successful also because the spacecraft stayed operational after landing,

showing the possibility of mining and exploration opportunities on more asteroids.
