First Satellite in orbit around the moon
The first satellite to perform a moon flyby was the Soviet Luna 1 in 1959.
Also in 1959 was the first satellite to impact the moon, the Luna 2. A series of launches, by both the US and USSR,
with varying degrees of success and many failures followed.
It was not until the Soviet Luna 10 that a successful lunar satellite orbit was achieved, in 1966.
In addition to the scientific instruments which the probe carried, it was engineered to play the sounds of the Soviet national anthem, broadcast to the national convention of the Soviet Communist Party.
