Lumpology Space Time Project:
First lunar rover (1970)
Part of the Luna program of Moon oriented Soviet space missions,
the unmanned craft Luna 17 landed on the surface of the Moon in November 1970.
The Luna 17 carried the very first lunar rover, an eight wheeled robot remotely guided by a team back on Earth.
The name given the lunar rover was the Lunokhod 1.
The Lunokhod 1 was designed to perform tests such as soil analyses,
experiments such as measuring the distance between the Earth and the Moon using lasers, and to send images back to Earth.
The rover was expected to work for approximately 3 months but in fact lasted for about 11 months, making it extra successful as a mission.
